Leatherface - BBC Sessions

How many punk bands are there named after horror movie characters? I can only think of Electric Frankenstein, Horace Pinker (main character in Shocker) and Leatherface but there's bound to be more.
Anyway I first heard Leatherface back in 1991 during my tape trading days. Mush was one side and if I remember rightly Bob Mould sound-alike band Arcwelder were on the other. I played Mush numerous times in my often unreliable 1979 Ford Escort's cassette player and eventually the cassette made its way to the list of tapes eaten by an Escort. Here's the compulsory Lemmy singing for Husker Du description that you'll find on other blogs that accompany Leatherface posts. At times Frankie Stubbs vocals sound a little like some Tom Waits gruffer material to my ears.

I had originally planned to post the early Leatherface album Fill Your Boots which has covers of Elvis Presley'sIn The Ghetto and Elton John's Candle in the wind which they make their own as they always do with covers. However my internet research has revealed that Pid records re-released this 1990 in February of this year. Here's a youtube clip, unfortunately with distorted sound, of Leatherface playing You are my sunshine which demonstrates how this band do cover songs.

Anyway here are collected BBC Sessions (which I originally assumed were Peel sessions but listening to the Disc Jockeys proves not all of this is) Anyway I found this elsewhere on the internet.

Semi Lemon Kola - Before Heaven EP (1994)

In the Evilis post Semi Lemon Kola were mentioned both as a band Evilis thought were awesome and a band I had assumed were funk metal due to having as many words in their name as Faith No More and as many syllables as Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I found this EP in the bargain bin at Real Groovy Records along with the Evilis EP. Semi Lemon Kola have a myspace site which describes their sound as power pop and features this EP's title song, Before Heaven.

I have no idea which international acts to fairly compare them to. I hear bits of New Zealand bands Supergroove 's funk and Second Child's strong pop sensibility. Semi Lemon Kola changed their name to Propeller and set the precedent for File Under Letter S New Zealand bands with released material to become filed under the letter P however they never made the switch back to their original name.

Tonyall - New Girl, Old Story (repost)

Here's a repost for sociologoan who requested it with a more interesting comment than the cliche "Link's dead, can you re-post this?" which is nice since it was the first repost request I've received. Here's the original post with said comment and original write up and here's the album.

Assault City, Cyclotrode X, Disjecta Membra, Horror Story at Valve June 6

I arrived as Wellington band Assault City were playing. Cool new band who have something of an 80s punk sound and have three members who do seperate lead vocals. I didn't dig their last song, which I think they played twice, because it sounded like NOFX (who I can't stand).

Next up were New Plymouth's Cyclotrode X who worship at the altar of Glenn Danzig. Overall their sound is derived from his metal/hard rock period. Their drummer stood out as the best musician in the band. They had a couple of catchy sing-alongs with titles like Blood and All I want to do is fuck the dead. They kept mentioning they had downloadable songs on their myspace page.

They were then followed by Disjecta Membra who are a goth band who have knocking around since the late nineties. They were very good and at times seemed obviously influenced by Bauhaus and The Mission although one song sounded a little like Nick Cave or The Tindersticks. They made three guitarist line-up changes during their set.

I left before Horror Story played due to simply wanting sleep.
